Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders manifest as pain during jaw movements, joint sounds, locking, and head and neck pain. Teeth clenching and grinding (bruxism) are among the most common causes.
Treatment is planned individually and may include night guards (splints), physiotherapy exercises, muscle-relaxing approaches and, when necessary, surgical options.
Signs of a jaw joint disorder
Pain or clicking when opening the jaw, morning jaw fatigue, pain radiating around the ear, headaches and jaw locking are the most common complaints.
How is TMJ treated?
Custom night guards (splints), physiotherapy exercises and muscle-relaxing approaches are the first step; resistant cases are planned with our surgical expertise.
For intra-articular cases that do not respond to medication and splint therapy, arthrocentesis (joint lavage) may be performed — a closed procedure that flushes the joint space, removes inflammatory content and eases jaw movement.
