What is diastema (a gap between teeth), and how is it closed?

Diastema is the name given to a visible gap between two teeth — most often between the upper two front teeth. While some people embrace a small gap as a personal feature, most prefer to close it for aesthetic reasons. The good news is that diastema can be resolved with more than one method today.

Why does diastema form?

  • A mismatch between tooth size and jaw size
  • The lip band (frenulum) tissue extending between the teeth
  • Missing or undersized teeth
  • Tooth drift caused by gum disease
  • Childhood habits such as thumb sucking

Ways to close diastema

There are several approaches to closing the gap, and the right choice depends on the size of the gap, its cause and the person's expectations:

  • Composite bonding: closing small gaps in a single session with tooth-matched filling material
  • Porcelain laminate: thin veneers on the front teeth that both close the gap and enhance smile aesthetics
  • Orthodontics (braces / clear aligners): bringing teeth together if the gap is due to drift
  • Gum/frenulum procedure: an additional option for gaps caused by the lip band

Which method suits you?

A single small gap is often resolved quickly with bonding or laminate, while irregularities involving several teeth may be more durably corrected with orthodontics. In some cases the methods are combined. It is not right to make a lasting decision without assessing gum health and the underlying cause of the gap.

A diastema can sometimes be a sign of an underlying gum problem, so identifying the cause before an aesthetic closure is important. Consult your dentist for the option best suited to you.
