E-max or zirconia? How to choose an aesthetic crown

The two most-compared materials in aesthetic dental crowns are E-max (glass ceramic) and zirconia. Both are metal-free and give natural-looking results, but their different properties make each stand out in different situations. The right choice depends on the tooth's position, the functional load and aesthetic expectations.

Where E-max stands out

Thanks to its high translucency, E-max offers a vibrant appearance very close to a natural tooth. It is especially preferred for front teeth — the most aesthetically visible part of the smile — and works well for thin veneer applications. Because it transmits light like a natural tooth, it avoids a 'lifeless/opaque' look.

Where zirconia has the advantage

Zirconia stands out for its high strength, giving it an advantage on back teeth where chewing forces are high, or in multi-unit restorations such as bridges. For patients who tend to clench (bruxism), fracture resistance is an important reason to choose it. Modern zirconia systems have also become highly aesthetic.

• A tendency to clench or grind → zirconia is considered for durability
