Children's fear of the dentist usually stems from anxiety about the unknown and negative stories they hear from others. With the right approach, this fear is easily overcome.
Time the first visit right
The most effective approach is planning the first visit before any treatment is needed, purely as an introduction. In our clinic, the first session with our pediatric specialist is all about getting used to the chair, discovering the instruments and a playful examination.
Use the right language at home
Avoid using the dentist as a scary figure at home ('If you don't brush, the doctor will give you a shot'). Positive language and routine check-ups build a healthy lifelong habit.
The ideal time for a first dental visit is after the first primary tooth erupts — around age one at the latest.
