A dental abscess is a collection of pus at the root tip or in a gum pocket, usually caused by untreated deep decay or gum disease. It presents with throbbing pain, swelling, sensitivity and sometimes fever.
An abscess does not heal on its own; depending on the source it requires root canal treatment, gum therapy or surgical drainage. Left untreated, the infection can spread to surrounding tissues.
