The pulp is the nerve-and-vessel bundle at the center of the tooth, commonly called the 'tooth nerve'. It nourishes the tooth and senses stimuli like hot and cold.
If deep decay or trauma inflames the pulp, severe pain follows; the tooth is then saved with root canal treatment. A treated tooth continues functioning, nourished by surrounding tissues.
