When should wisdom teeth be removed? Signs, surgery and recovery

Wisdom teeth usually erupt between ages 17-25 and often cannot find enough room in modern jaws. Some stay silent for years; others make themselves known with recurring pain and infections.

When is removal necessary?

Recurring gum infection (pericoronitis), decay or pressure damage on the neighboring tooth, cyst formation and orthodontic planning are the main reasons. Fully impacted teeth causing no problems can simply be monitored — not every wisdom tooth needs to go.

How is the operation performed?

A panoramic X-ray — and 3D tomography when needed — maps the tooth's position and its relation to the nerve. The procedure is painless under local anesthesia; for anxious patients we offer sedation with our anesthesiologist. Surgery usually takes 20-40 minutes.

Recovery: what to watch

For the first 24 hours, bite on the gauze, avoid spitting and rinsing — protecting the clot is the key to healing. Prefer soft, lukewarm foods for the first days and avoid smoking for at least 72 hours. Mild swelling and bruising begin to fade within 2-3 days.

Pain that increases from day 3 onwards may signal 'dry socket' — contact your clinic; a simple dressing brings quick relief.

At our center in Çiğli, Izmir, impacted tooth operations are performed by our associate professor oral surgeon in a fully equipped operating theatre. Book a panoramic assessment if you have any doubts.
