For many patients, implants offer a reliable, long-lasting solution for missing teeth. In some cases, however, years without teeth, bone resorption or an insufficient upper jawbone make standard implants impossible. Where bone grafting and sinus lifting were once the only route, zygomatic implants have become an important alternative.
Zygomatic implants are anchored in the cheekbone (zygoma) when the upper jawbone is insufficient. This can eliminate the need for bone grafting in many patients and shorten the path to fixed teeth.
Who is a candidate?
- Patients with advanced bone loss in the upper jaw
- People who have been without teeth for many years
- Patients whose previous implant treatment failed
- Those who prefer to avoid bone grafting
- Fully edentulous patients who want fixed teeth instead of removable dentures
Suitability can only be determined after a clinical examination and 3D imaging.
Planning: examination and 3D tomography
Careful planning is the foundation of success. Your general health, medications, past operations, oral condition, gum health and bone structure are assessed in detail. A 3D dental tomography (CBCT) then maps bone volume, sinus cavities, the cheekbone anatomy and the exact implant angles — making surgery safer and more predictable.
The surgery and same-day teeth
Zygomatic implant placement requires advanced surgical experience. It can be performed under local anesthesia, sedation or general anesthesia depending on the scope and your comfort; the operation takes a few hours on average and is painless.
One key advantage: in suitable patients, fixed temporary teeth can be attached the same day or shortly after, so you don't spend the healing period without teeth. Whether same-day loading is possible depends on the initial stability of the implants.
Recovery and long-term care
Mild swelling, bruising or sensitivity may occur after surgery and usually subsides within days. Cold compresses, regular medication, soft foods, good oral hygiene and avoiding smoking all support healing. Once the implants integrate with the bone, custom permanent prosthetics are made — balancing aesthetics, chewing, speech and lip support.
Brushing at least twice a day, interdental cleaning and regular professional check-ups are essential for the long-term success of zygomatic implants.
