Plaque is a sticky, colorless layer of bacteria constantly forming on tooth surfaces. Acids produced by these bacteria feeding on sugars cause decay, while buildup at the gum line causes inflammation.
Brushing twice daily and flossing removes most of it. Plaque left in place hardens into tartar within 48–72 hours and can then only be removed professionally.
