Periodontitis is untreated gingivitis progressing into the bone and connective tissue supporting the tooth. It involves gum recession, teeth appearing longer, mobility and permanent bone loss.
It is a leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Deep cleaning (scaling and root planing), surgery when needed and strict maintenance can halt progression; lost bone does not regrow on its own.
