Gum recession is the gum pulling back from the tooth neck toward the root surface. Hard brushing, gum disease, grinding and misaligned teeth are the main causes.
The exposed root surface is prone to sensitivity and decay. In early stages, removing the cause halts progression; advanced cases can be treated with gum graft surgery.
