Wisdom teeth are the rearmost molars, usually erupting between ages 17–25. Modern jaws often lack space for them; they may remain impacted or partially erupted, causing pain and infection.
Wisdom teeth that erupt properly and can be cleaned do not have to be removed. Impacted, decayed or damaging ones are extracted surgically.
