Amalgam is a grey filling material made by mixing a silver-tin-copper alloy with mercury, used for many decades. It is durable but not aesthetic, as it does not match tooth color.
Today tooth-colored composite fillings are preferred in most cases. Sound amalgam fillings do not necessarily need replacement; your dentist evaluates each case.
