Abrasion is the mechanical wearing of enamel caused by hard-bristled brushes, incorrect brushing technique, or habits that strain the teeth (pen biting, nail biting). It most often appears near the gum line.
Early on it causes sensitivity; advanced cases may need fillings or crowns. A soft-bristled brush and proper technique prevent most abrasion.
