Dentin is the yellowish tissue under the enamel making up most of the tooth's volume. Its micro-channels connect to the tooth nerve, which is why sensitivity is felt when enamel wears away or decay reaches dentin.
Wear and decay exposing dentin should be restored promptly; otherwise the process can progress to the nerve.
