Tooth decay occurs when acids produced by plaque bacteria from sugary foods dissolve the enamel and then the dentin. It is silent at first; sensitivity, pain and discoloration appear as it progresses.
Decay caught early is fixed with a small filling; decay reaching the nerve requires root canal treatment. Regular brushing, flossing and six-monthly check-ups are the best prevention.
